On December 14, ICANN gave the go-ahead to the “.mobi” top level domain.

What’s bizarre is that another “mobile friendly domain” opened a couple of weeks ago: dotMP (for mobile phone … new dotMP registrations are here: http://www.get.mp/

The folks at dotMP claim that:

.mp is the only Internet top-level domain (TLD) designated exclusively as the mobile address .… dotMP is the complete Mobile Content Platform and delivers the solutions needed to put business and consumer content on the Mobile Internet. With dotMP, mobile content is published quickly and managed easily with no site authoring or programming required.”

Apparently it costs $45,000 to apply for a new TLD at ICANN. At dotMP’s rate of $49.95, they need less than 1,000 registrations to recover their investment.

So why did ICANN approve both dotMP and dotMOBI???

  • Thank you Marcus, that's very helpful.
  • dotMP is a ccTLD (for the country Northern Mariana Islands) while dotMobi is a sponsored gTLD.
