I am half-Finnish through my mother and people often ask me whether the language is related to Scandinavian languages or to Russian. The answer is … Finnish is related to Hungarian and Estonian. This link to Wikipedia provides “everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask”  about Finnish:

The Finno-Ugric languages form a subfamily of the Uralic languages. The majority of linguists believe that Finnish, Hungarian and Estonian, among other languages, should be included in the group. Unlike most of the other languages spoken in Europe, the Finno-Ugric languages are not part of the Indo-European family of languages .… Many of the smaller Finno-Ugric languages are endangered and near extinction.

And that’s most probably why most Finns speak many languages … no one speaks theirs!
