In memoriam, Kashmir, 1998–2009

by Alex. Average Reading Time: about a minute.

What's going on?

You brought joy to those you touched. You had an irresistible charm borne of innocent mischief. You saw yourself as more human than cat, and made your presence felt despite not speaking much. You participated in everything and your curiosity knew no bounds. You were a peacemaker and a soother. You ruled the house and you welcomed all into your sphere. You feared naught. You lived to eat and you ate everything — we understood this as a show of affection, of belonging, of participating in the daily family rituals. You lived a full life, and you gave more than you took.

So long, my steadfast companion. Thank you for the memories; you graced our lives. You are my friend and I miss you much. May you rest in peace.

The Best Thing in the World

What’s the best thing in the world?
June-rose, by May-dew impearled;
Sweet south-wind, that means no rain;
Truth, not cruel to a friend;
Pleasure, not in haste to end;
Beauty, not self-decked and curled
Till its pride is over-plain;
Love, when, so, you’re loved again.
What’s the best thing in the world?
–Something out of it, I think.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

    I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. I know how difficult the loss of a loved one is. My thoughts are with you.

    A beautiful tribute to a dear friend. I share in your loss.

    Alex, so sorry. I have lost more beloved pets than I care to remember and it is always bittersweet… sadness for the loss, and joy for the memories of such pure, unimpaired devotion that it seems only a pet can bring. Cats are mystical, magical creatures, and I hope another enters your life soon.

    I’m really sorry to hear about this. It’s incredibly difficult to let a family member go, even if it was Kashmir’s time. That’s a very sweet photo, as well — what a fantastic companion.

    Sinto muito da sua saudade e tristeza que acompanha a perda de um grande companheiro.
    I know well the emptiness that our little fur friends leave us. May you find comfort in knowing Kashmir loved you and your family more than anything. Hugs, Cintia.

    Alex —

    So sorry to hear about your loss. I could see the deep devotion and love you had for Kashmir when we spoke on Monday. I buried my red cat Thomas under a bird bath and bird feeder 11 yrs ago in my back yard — and it brings solace to know his spirit still lives in my heart every time I watch the birds visit his grave.

    I’m sorry to hear that Kashmir didn’t make it. He was obviously a cherished part of your family and the loss is great.

    My thoughts are with you.

    Sorry about your loss Alex. I know what my 3 cats mean to me and I can imagine the kind of pain you’re going through. He’s probably in a better place now and only that can give us comfort. Be well my friend.

    Thank you so much for your comments, it’s heartwarming to receive your goodwill and it helps me a lot. Kashmir will now live on in my memory, as will the many lessons he taught me.

    Heck, I am following you just for the beautiful eulogy. Some people think that men have no heart for cats, Ha! We lost our Champ after a great 17 years and it was very difficult. I went to the vet to put him down after too much suffering and I cried. I told the nurse I was sorry and that it must seem strange to see a man cry over a cat. No, she said, it happens all the time. His ashes are on our mantle dedicated to all the love he gave us.
