Projects

Listen with webReader

Here are some of the projects and work I am currently involved in. Please contact me if you would like to know more about these activities.

StartPR

The idea for StartPR grew out of a need for better blogger relations. People are engaged in conversations with each other about your company, your brands, your products and your services. They are also reaching out to you with insights, suggestions, stories, and sometimes, important issues and major complaints. These conversations are all happening online, right now.

StartPR is a service that helps you find, manage and respond to mentions of your company, your brand, your products, your service and your people online. Please visit StartPR to learn more, or this article at Network Solutions. Please contact me at alex [at] startpr.com

VoxMedical

VoxMedical is a worldwide online community for the medical profession where physicians and healthcare professionals may discuss clinical symptoms, treatments, and prevention. Please contact me at alex [at] voxmedical.com

Adjunct Professor, University of Miami School of Communication

I am an adjunct professor at the University of Miami; I teach a semester-long class on social media to aspiring journalists and PR professionals. We explore social media topics and case studies involving online identity and expression, community engagement, brand building, citizen journalism, and the Web 2.0 tools and services that make it all possible. Please consult the syllabus on the course wiki. Please contact me at a.decarvalho [at] miami.edu

Public Speaking

I speak on a variety of topics related to social media, branding, identity, PR, marketing, and future directions for print journalism. Please contact me at adecarvalho+speaking [at] gmail.com

  • Social Media for Business: Challenge or Opportunity. What are the implications, challenges and opportunities of social computing affords your company or organization? How can you engage communities across various new platforms to improve your marketing, branding, product development, customer service, hiring, and other efforts? What are the pitfalls and how to avoid them? I speak about a framework for adopting new media with supporting case studies from large and small organizations.
  • Branding and Identity: The more you share about who you are as an individual and the more human your tone, the more interesting you become to others; you can really build a passionate community through transparency. But where do you draw the line between your public persona and your personal interests? Is it really the same? If so, how do you deal with the privacy implications? Are you concerned … or enthusiastic? I explore these issues and more in an evolving series of presentations on online identity and brand building, including practical tips on how to go about the business of creating your online identity, persona, and brand.
  • Community: The professions of Marketing, PR, and Journalism are changing fundamentally as companies and news organizations feel the consequences of consumers and audiences taking to the web not only to consume media, but also to publish their thoughts and media. Should the wall between companies and consumers come down? Should journalists become more engaged with their communities of readers? I speak about the successes, failures, and lessons learned as we transition to new modes of communication and engagement online.
  • I also speak to audiences about the burgeoning South Florida technology scene and RefreshMiami and BarCampMiami’s roles in bringing people together.

Here are some of the presentations and keynotes I have delivered:

Social Media Workshops

Increasingly, companies, PR firms, and interactive agencies are meeting, talking about, and sometimes questioning the the significance of social media and the impact it will have on business marketing, PR, and communications. Everyone has heard of a high-profile success or misfire of a social-media program.

I conduct workshops to bring people up to speed on the history, culture, technology, and platforms of social media. By the end of the workshop, professionals will have the tools, skills, and understanding to better evaluate their company’s and their own options and strategies going forward. Please visit socialobject.com to learn more about the social media workshops.

Community

I organize regular South Florida web and technology meetups, including RefreshMiami, BarCampMiami, MobileMondayMiami, and Social Media Club South Florida. Please visit this page for more information. Please get in touch with me at alex [at] barcampmiami.org for more details.
