Everything you know about web design is wrong!
Dan Willis from Sapient talks about how “Everything you know about web design is wrong” (this post is live-blogged and mostly paraphrased): “Just as early filmmakers struggled to break free from the conventions of live theater, after 10+ years Web designers are still trapped in the structures of the past. How’s the social media scene in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo?
Last year flew by and I didn’t get the chance to spend time with family and friends in Brazil during the holidays. Instead, I spent a week in Israel, right as the war started. I’m in Brazil now, though, and I look forward to meeting a number of people I’ve corresponded with on Twitter. Social [...] Read more – ‘How’s the social media scene in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo?’.
A week in Israel and Jordan
My mind is filled with questions as I ponder the history, culture, and current events of the region. I’ve heard so many positives and negatives, and it is with a great sense of curiosity and excitement that I travel to Israel and Jordan next week. In particular, I am anxious to meet some people from [...] Read more – ‘A week in Israel and Jordan’.
Celebrating another refreshing year!
Last night we celebrated another great year of RefreshMiami meetups (slideshow here). During the year, our membership doubled as we accomodated about 35 presentations by South Florida new media startups, entrepreneurs, and freelance professionals. Our meetups were attended on average by 50 people, with some events drawing about 100. We’re particularly grateful to Yahoo! Hispanic [...] Read more – ‘Celebrating another refreshing year!’.

Gratitude is the memory of the heart
This has been a turbulent year by most accounts, so I spent Thanksgiving remembering those who stuck by me through thick and thin: Brian Breslin has been a constant friend as well as a partner in organizing RefreshMiami, BarCampMiami and building StartPR. When I struck out on my own earlier this year, Brian lent me office [...] Read more – ‘Gratitude is the memory of the heart’.
Course Syllabus on Social Media Communication, Community, and Literacy
I’ve published a curriculum for social media literacy at the college and graduate level. This is based on my experience teaching the subject at the University of Miami School of Communication and on the presentations and workshops I’ve given. The coursework and some of the topics are also inspired by Howard Rheingold’s class on Virtual Worlds [...] Read more – ‘Course Syllabus on Social Media Communication, Community, and Literacy’.
You, the online brand
We had another great meetup at RefreshMiami last night at Yahoo! Hispanic Americas. Adam Singer presented a “Coffee 2.0″ social media case study, Michael Montgomery spoke about microformats, I presented “You, the online brand”, attached below, and Davide Di Cillo presented his new Twitter social football service, Twootball: Just why did Davide create Twootball? BlogOrlando 2008 … third time’s the charm
BlogOrlando gets better each year, I’m very glad I went. I of course enjoyed reconnecting with friends who flew in from across the country, seeing the Orlando tech community again, and meeting new people. One of the highlights was getting firsthand case studies from the teams that manage(d) social media at major corporations: Jeff Rubenstein [...] Read more – ‘BlogOrlando 2008 … third time’s the charm’.
Social Media Club forms interim board
I’m honored to be counted among the people invited to give new impetus to the Social Media Club. Through conversations with companies, organizations, local universities, and interactive agencies, I’ve experienced the growing interest in social media and the increased demand for industry practitioners. Social media framework for discussion
I’ve had countless conversations with companies and interactive agencies on the significance of social media and the impact it will have on businesses’ marketing, PR and product development activities and processes. On the surrender of a beloved Mac
surrender originally uploaded by alexdecarvalho. I’m giving back my Mac today. Social object and the object-centered environment
Sergeant Jalonen must have spent his childhood in a concrete sandbox After I graduated from college, I completed mandatory military service in the Finnish Army. Social objects and the observer’s paradox
My previous post about “social objects”, described how your profile, what you publish and what share online determines the impression you make and provides topics or hooks for others to get in touch with you. The term social object is a convenient shorthand for describing such hooks, which represent many of the reasons people socialize [...] Read more – ‘Social objects and the observer’s paradox’.
The use of social objects as artefacts for identity management
First, a bit of history Before talking about social objects as accessories for online impression management, I wanted to surface a bit of history about the term, “Social Object”.
